Aussie leaving UK permanently - what to do about tax & NI, etc.

Postby Andrew79 on Tue Aug 02, 2005 10:57 pm

Hi,

I've been living & working in London for almost 2 & 1/2 years (on a UK passport). I am returning to Australia in the next 4 weeks.
What can I claim back? Obviously I can claim some tax back... but what about NI contributions, or anything like that. As I won't be returning, do I have to leave my pention money here?
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks.

If you have paid tax on your income during the current tax year then it is likely that you are due a refund. If you drop me an email I will send you the appropriate forms.

You may wish to check your P45/P60/Payslips for all the tax years you have been here in case you have overpaid for those years as well.

You will not be able to claim back any NI contributions.

You can probably transfer your pension fund to a fund in Australia if you wish. The cost of doing so may outweigh the benefit so you should really discuss this with a financial adviser.
