Can I sell to my children

Postby wamah on Tue May 04, 2004 3:20 am

I am married but my wife is not on the deeds of the property which I own outright. Should I add her name to the deeds to avoid tax problems if I die?

Can I sell my property to my children for a reduced price (Property worth over 500,000 and I may want to sell to my son and daughter for below 50%)

If this is your home, you can gift to your wife or sell at 50% to your children without CGT and be in a better position regarding inheritance taxes. If not your home, no CGT arises on gift to wife, but does to children.

Any deal for your home involving your children needs to be structured as a home reversion at an arms length price. Be sure to get professional advice on this - I'm just an experienced amateur.
