CGT section on 2016-2017 HMRC Tax Form

Postby DJ314159 » Sat Apr 08, 2017 3:05 pm

Anyone tried to submit a SA tax form, one which includes Capital Gains, for the year 2016-2017? There appear to be some new boxes CGT45-52 which prevent submission. On the one hand you are told to leave the fields blank if they do not apply to you (indeed, there is a message saying they will not apply to most people) but on the other hand when one tries to submit the form an error message is displayed saying the boxes must not be empty! Note that this latter error message is displayed at submission time and not when you are filling out the form, which itself seems strange.

This is an error which will prevent many people from submitting their SA forms, if they have capital gains.

It is very hard to contact HMRC and let them know they have a problem. One has to get past the first person who answers your call, who usually knows very little, and then get passed to successively more knowledgeable people before eventually arriving at the right person, which I believe to be the technical team in this case.

My question is: is there a painless way to let HMRC know they have a problem?

Hi,

May we ask what tax return software(s) you are using?

It will help to isolate if it's specific to one package, or a procedural issue across the board.

Hi,
HMRC software - i.e. filling out the SA form on https://www.tax.service.gov.uk

Managed to get through to the technical team in Manchester who were quite apologetic and took my email saying they would get back to me when the problem is resolved.

I have not heard anything from them and, I have to say, I have not much confidence that they will resolve it in the near future even though it's a very serious issue.

Lots of people with Capital Gains probably won't try and file their forms for another few weeks or so (think 30 day rule). That's a good reason to get on top of this problem right now.

There is also an error on the last but one box on the CGT unlisted shares page. Ive informed HMRC but no response yet

Question reads " Losses used against income - amount claimed against 2015-16 income" it should be "2016-2017". Putting a value in here creates the correct calculation for 2016/17
It doesnt help the questions are asked in different order for the SA108 (Q41-44).

Havent submitted yet so not expereinced the filing error

I had this problem when trying to submit my return and to get round it used the section which they said you shouldn't and claimed my capital losses against income. So that they knew why, I made a note in the explanation box at the end of the section.
I don't know if any of the other posters have noticed that the totals for sales and purchases of stocks and shares are not added up correctly. In my case both totals were £60 more in the revenue calculations than my own. It didn't really matter as the net total of gains made was the same. I pointed this out in the comments box at the end of the return.

I have found the answer to this - it worked for me anyway!

By trial and error I found that if I put a value in question 51 Adjustments to Capital Gains Tax (0.00 in my own case) then the submission went through OK. Values in the other questions in that section cause multiple error messages, leaving question 51 blank caused the single error message 8425[CGT45-52] must not be empty.

Hope this helps others - was driving me MAD!!!
