Worst case scenario - HMRC disallows all of your expenses for the enquiry year and raises assessments for previous years. But do you have nothing at all? Bank records? Diary? Other records? You will also be exposed to interest and, possibly, penalties.

The Revenue often like to pretend that there is a rule that says that you cannot get tax relief for an expense if you have not got an invoice. No such rule exists - and they will back down (a bit) when you remind them of this fact. But in the absence of invoices, you'll need some kind of evidence (e.g. diaries etc as per mullet's post), to support your claim. If you have invoices to support current expenses, that may help your argument.
