class 2 NI self employed

Postby foxrf49 » Fri Apr 29, 2016 10:11 am

Hi.
I have searched the forum a bit but so far haven't found an answer to my problem although a recent post is similar to mine but has no replies, so here's hoping.
I began self employment in November last year. In additon to this I was employed by 2 agencies. I also have a small pension. I only do a few hours. I have been billed £61.60 for Class 2 NI but I only earned £2,067.00 self employed. This is well below the threshold of £5,965.00. My other figures were earnings from employment and small pension was about £10,000. The amount of £61.60 seems to be a direct calculation of my 22 weeks of self employment multiplied by £2.80 class 2 NI. I know I've earned more than the threshold in total earnings but I understood that a threshold of £5,965 applied to only self employed earnings. Thanks in anticipation

You need to search for a class 2 small earnings exception form and submit it.

You need to search for a class 2 small earnings exception form and submit it.
Small earnings exception form has been withdrawn from service to the best of my knowledge and from 6/4/2015 the class 2NI is calculated as part of the self assessment tax return submission process, hmrc computers aren't coping very well with this changeover however. Mr Dell have you submitted your tax return without applying for the exception as part of the submission process? - presuming you have submitted your 2016 return and not claimed exception if you want it you will need to amend your return to claim the exception.

The class 2 was withdrawn from 6 April 2015. The clue is that the person asking question received a bill. From 2015-16 it will be collected through self assessment, but up until 11 April 2015 then a claim form needs to be submitted.

Also why would I need to claim? I am not self employed.

Apologies for entering your name in error Mr Dell - i meant to enter foxrf49

Mr Dell
The clue is that the person asking question received a bill.
The op also advise they only commenced trading November last year - in which case they should not have had a bill, perhaps though they did mean November 2014 though, some clarification from the op with regard to start date would help.
