Declaring money received from non-married partner

Declaring money received from non-married partner

Postby j789 on Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:15 pm

I am registered as self-employed but received no earnings in the 2010-11 tax year. I live with my partner (we are not married) and we have joint ownership of our house. She is also self-employed and occasionally transfers some money into my account to cover standing orders. The total money transferred for that tax year was around £3k. I receive no other income or benefits.

Do I have to declare that money as income on my self-assessment tax return? If so, where do I declare it, and am I likely to be taxed on it even though she has already paid income tax on that money?

Any information appreciated.

No, no entry is needed on your tax return, as this isn't business income. It goes without saying, but she shouldn't be including the payments as expenses in her self employed accounts (I'm sure she isn't anyway).

The fact you aren't married has no effect.

That's a relief! No, she isn't declaring it as expenses.

Thanks for your quick reply.
