Do I owe the IRS?

I was listed as a "officer/director" of a family member's business. She has since went bankrupt and is out of business. She now owes the IRS $1500 and cannot pay they (IRS) contacted me saying I am responsible for that debt and I need to pay or they will come after me for it. I had knowledge that she was going to use me as a "director" but I never signed any paperwork (not even electronically) and I never got any money from the business. Am I responsible for this debt and do I need to pay the IRS?

So many questions, but probably a legal and / or US tax questions:

Was this a UK company?
What / and where was the actual business?
Are you based in the UK?
Are you a US citizen?

Someone cannot just put your name down as a director (certainly in UK law) simply becuase the position of director is a serious one not one to be taken lightly. However, whether this argument just gets that family member deeper into the mire (as you say you had knowledge as well.)
