Emplyoer/Tax Code/Self Assesstment issues

Postby chunkymoonkey on Fri Nov 18, 2011 5:39 pm

Hi, I wonder if I could get some advice.

Four years ago I stopped being self employed. Because the tax office have not told me to stop submitting tax returns I'm still having to do them until I'm told to stop.
I've have been employed for the last four years and my employer has been paying my tax national insurance etc. When I recently asked my Emplyoer for my tax code I could sense he was very cagey about the subject, but said he would sort it out. I haven't recieved payslips for about two years now, and have since found out the company I work for went bankrupt. Im
still working there but it would seem I now work for a different company. I have no contract or anything.
My boss is quite a tricky person and the last thing I want to do is push it to much in case I loose my job.
This however is really starting to stress me out because the last thing I want is agro with the tax office.

How do I know if my tax and NI has been paid? How do I get my tax code, and how do I submit a tax return without one?

Any advice would be very gratefully appreciated.

You don't need a tax code to do your tax return. What you do need is your form P60 which will show details of salary and tax deducted.

You could try contacting HMRC to ask what details they have for you.

Just as an aside you should be given credit for all the tax and NI that should have been deducted and paid over to HMRC by your employer, irrespective of whether they have actually paid HMRC (Reg.72 applies).
