gifts of cash and rest of estate is left to charities

Postby Karoline on Mon Aug 30, 2010 12:06 am

A friend intends to leave the bulk of her money to charity but wants to make gifts in her lifetime to a few selected friends. She has offered to give me £40K towards a house purchase. The total of her gifts given in her lifetime will be well under the inheritance tax threshold. As she is leaving the rest of her estate to charities after her death will this gift be exempt from tax?

On the facts (as stated) there will be no inheritance tax to pay on the gift now or if she were to die within 7 years of it.
