Help Please !!!

Postby kittybonbon on Tue Jan 31, 2012 8:55 pm

Hi,
I registered as self employed in Novemberof 2011, the tax office acknowledged this then said they would send me a notice to complete a tax return ( I have not recieved this yet) should I file my return for 2nd of feb or not.
I am totally clueless about this and think I have made a horrible mistake which is going to cost me a £100 fine
Any advise would be great

If they have not actually sent you a tax return (or a notice to file), then in strictness you are not obliged to file yet. But is there any chance that it has been sent to a previous address or otherwise misdirected? If you are in a position to complete your tax return then it makes sense to file it as soon as you can.

Hello kittybonbon,

As you became self employed last November you fall into the current tax year 2011/2012 meaning a tax return will be issued to you this coming April after the current tax year has ended which is why you have not received one yet.

The deadline to file the return will be 31.01.13 but obviously for tax planning purposes the earlier you complete it the better.

Happy to help if required so please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further assistance.
Kind regards,

But when did your self employment commence? If after April 2011 then you have no problem as there is nothing to report yet; sorry I missed that point in my original response.
