Do HMRC know that your mother died? If not, inform them. The tax return should be addressed to "The Executor" or "The Personal Representative". Whoever is dealing with your mother's estate should be able to complete the tax return. If that is you, then I am afraid that it is one of the responsibilities of winding up a person's affairs.

Remember that if you are ultimately responsible for filiong her return and you are going to be caught out by time limits the opportunity would be there to complete the form as best you can (estimated if necessary) with provisional figures where exact information is not presently available and then set about getting the exact and final figures to submit the final version as early as possible. You may well have a reasonable excuse for the lateness of submission of the tax return and you would be best to contact HMRC and expalin that you have only become aware of this responsibility (if it is really yours). Any return should be addressed to the personal representative /executor/executrix and therefore if that has not been done I would ask for a form to be correctly issued now which could have the effect of giving you 3 months in which to complete it.....
