HMRC is trying to take £764.72 :o(

Postby djaudiofreak on Thu Apr 07, 2011 7:05 pm

Hi,

My girlfriend received a letter from HMRC stating in tax year 2007-08 they under calculated her tax and she under paid by £764.72. They say this is because she worked for 2 companies that both claimed for the full tax free allowances and she there for received more then she was meant to.

Is there anything we can do as they are going to start taking it from her wages and we can't really afford it at the moment.

Regards,

Ross

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if she was employed by two companies at the same time, both using a normal tax code, then HMRC are likely correct. If you can demonstrate that repayment in a single tax year is likely to cause hardship then you may be able to convince HMRC to collect over a longer period, but this is discretionary and will only be considered in cases of genuine hardship rather than simply claiming that it will leave you a little short.
