How long do I have to live in a property for it to be designated my prime residence (in order to avoid CGT when I sell it)?

The length of time is less important than the quality of occupation - you need in effect to be able to show that you did occupy it as your main residence and that it was your intention to continue to do so. If you acquired the property wiht the intention of reslling at a profit then that rules out the relief.

If you want to be more specific you can contact me on 01394 274857.
