Inheritance Tax nill rate band

Inheritance Tax nill rate band

Postby A116 on Thu Sep 29, 2011 5:34 pm

Hello to all,

At the moment there is nill rate band of £325,000 of IHT for married couples or cival partners.

The question i have got is,
Suppose if all the assets are in the wife's name (eg,at market value of £650,000) and suppose husband
dies first and wife dies later and she leaves everything to the childrens.
In addition to her nill rate band of £325,000 can she claim her late husband's nill rate band
(eventhough he did not own any assets) to set against the children's legacy.

Yes.

As the husband will not have used his own NRB (as effectively he had no assets) then his wife can claim her husband's NRB on her death.
