Is National Insurance No. required for Me.

Postby aroy on Mon Jan 18, 2010 6:58 pm

Hi,

I checked in many forums or websites but did not get a clear answer.

I have come to UK on a Tier 2 (intra company transfer) Work Permit for 5 months, and will be returning back in february (2010).

Is NI no. necessary for me?
I will not gain anything by paying NI contribution (£250+) as I don't want pension benefits or stay in UK.

Please give me a valid reason, which will justify why NI no. is needed/not-needed by me.
Will it help in tax claiming, NHS or etc...I don't know..etc....

This will help me in better understanding.

Regards,
Ani

As you're on a work permit, you're obviously not an EU citizen, so if you want UK NHS benefits etc you have to pay NI.
If you're being paid in the UK your employer has to deduct NI along with the tax.
With a pinch of salt take what I say, but don't exceed your RDA

Hi Ani,

Employees who are sent on a temporary assignment to the UK and who have come from a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or from a country with which the UK does not have a reciprocal social security contributions agreement are often excepted from paying UK national insurance for a period of 52 weeks. This exception is to prevent individuals who normally work outside the UK, but who work in the UK for short periods from paying UK national insurance and thereby accessing the UK social security benefit system.

For the 52 week exception to apply you must have a continuing non-UK employment relationship and you should return to that non-UK employment at the end of your UK assignment.

It might be worth checking with your employer to see whether you qualify for this exception which would also apply to employer national insurance contributions.

We hope this helps.
