Letter from Compliance

Letter from Compliance

Postby Chip on Sat Dec 24, 2011 2:48 pm

I know it's Christmas Eve but wondered if anyone is around who can help ! Got a letter from HMRC Compliance yesterday, well its not a letter as such it's a self assessment tax return for 2006/2007 and a letter that just says can you fill this in and send it back! Thats it, thats all it says!
As I already did this and paid my tax for that year and every year since I am wondering/worrying why they have sent it.
Could it be that I have just been picked as a spot check, or have they found something that I should be worrying about that is unknown to me.
My accountant is now shut for Christmas and although I don't think I have anything to worry about I am still worrying!
Has anyone else received anything like this. There is no actual letter saying we are checking you, its just a 2006/2007 blank tax return!
Many many thanks if anyone can shred any light onto why they would require me to do this.

Chip,

Don't let this issue spoil your Christmas. If you have already submitted a tax return and paid any tax due you should have nothing to worry about.

I suggest you call your accountant as soon as they re-open after Christmas and I'm sure they'll be able to resolve the mix-up for you.

Kind regards

This sounds like a duplicate self assessment record; it happens sometimes. HMRC might have some information on you (such as a taxable source or capital gain etc) which they have been unable to match to the records that they hold for you. So they just slap out a fresh tax return ... all you need to do is contact them (they might still be open?) and tell them your full name and NI number. That should enable them to trace your existing record and ditch the erroneous one. (If that is indeed what has happened.)

Have they got your name precisely correct on the latest tax return? Both initials?
Do you have a father or son with the same names/initials which could have caused confusion?
Is your NI number showing on the tax return? Does it show on the original return for 2006-07?
Look at the 10 digit reference (UTR) on the form - is it different from your "normal" UTR?

I echo etf's comment - there is nothing to worry about. But you do need to take some simple actions to sort it out. And even if HMRC correctly issued a tax return to arrive on Christmas Eve, you would have 3 months to complete and submit it.

Many Thanks to both of you kind people who I don't know but took the time to reply on Christmas Eve. I am so so grateful! I will check all the details, it was one of the things that crossed my mind that it might be. Must confess that I had little sleep last night, but I am going to pour myself a glass of wine now and leave it be till next week when they reopen. I will let you know what they say.
Once again thank you very much, it has made me feel so much better to know that lovely people do exist !
