move in with parents ?

move in with parents ?

Postby Richard74 on Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:46 pm

Hello,

I am currently organising to set up in business and I have the possibility to move back in with my parents whilst I get myself on my feet.
I am likely to set-up as a sole trader. (My father runs a sole-trader business from the same address and my mother is retired).
My question is, if I choose this option will it affect them financially in any way ? (no need to joke about me eating too much of the food from the fridge etc.. )

Sorry for the generality of this question.

Richard.

I can't see any taxation issues in the question. Will you be paying them rent and are you asking whether that would give rise to taxable income for your parents? In simple terms the Rent a Room scheme is an optional scheme that lets you (in this case your parents) receive £4,250 tax-free 'gross' income (receipts before expenses) from renting furnished accommodation in their home. Remember that you will not be able to deduct any such rental expenditure from your business income, as it is not a business expense.
