Moving back to Portugal after employment and self-employment

Moving back to Portugal after employment and self-employment

Postby Portugal on Mon May 16, 2011 11:34 am

Dear all,

After studying three years and working approx four years in the UK, I am now moving back to my home country Portugal. Will I be able to transfer my NIC contributions to Portugal? Do the UK and Portugal have an agreement on this matter? Or do I have to get an NIC "statement" or pension forecast to access pension from the UK once I reach that age?

Also, how can I find out if I am entitled to apply for NIC excess to be refunded? I am both self-employed and employed. The NIC contributions I pay under self-employment are minor, but I am also enrolled in the PAYE of two employers, paying two NIC contributions.

I appreciate any advice and experience you might be able to share.

Best wishes to all.

HMRC Booklet NI38 may be helpful - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/nico/ni38.pdf.

Unless you have been earning in excess of £42,000 in your employments, it is unlikely that you will have paid too much NI here - it is perfectly possible to pay both as a self-employed person and as an employee, and each employment is treated separately for NI purposes.
