NI - Self employed half way through the year.

Postby T Rivers on Tue Aug 22, 2006 11:32 pm

I have been employed for half of the tax year and subsequently paid NI in the usual way. I have been self employed for 31 weeks of 05/06. I understand that the class 2 contribution will be £2.10 and Class 4 contributions are at 8%. Is this calculated on the self employed earnings? ie:
Self employed income: 11665.00
Expenses: 2598.15
Net: 9066.85

Nil rate band 4895 = 0 NI
8% band 4171.85 = 333.75

I am a bit confused with the Nil rate band, has this already been used up by my employers when they calculated my NI? Or does the nil rate band need to be apportioned over the weeks that I was self employed?

I have trawled through some NI sites but am still confused please HELP!!!

Thanks in advance.

Your calculation is correct. You probably should round up your expenses as there is no need for pennies!
