Non Resident returning to UK

Non Resident returning to UK

Postby sl209h on Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:57 am

Hi, i currently work for a UK employer but have been posted abroad on an overseas assignment for the last 6 years, P85 was completed on departure and i am currently classed non-resident, but still paid in the UK with NT tax code.

My international assignment will come to an end in January 2011, where i will return to the UK continuing to work for my current employer.

1) Can anyone advise if there are any HMRC forms to complete on return to the UK?
2) Assuming i return in January 2011, will i be liable for UK tax on my income for all of the 2010/2011 tax year, or only from date of arrival back in UK, or only liable from 2011/2012 onwards?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Usually, although there is no legal requirement to do so, Form P86 is lodged on return.

You will only be liable to UK income tax and CGT from the date of arrival

I assume your reference to 6 years means that you have been non-resident for 5 complete tax years?
