Not sure where to start...

Hi everyone - I am hoping for some help or guidance.

My girlfriend's father was killed in an industrial accident 3 years ago and she has just received an out of court settlement from his employer. Could someone please let us know the situation with regards to whether this is taxable or not Or where we could find the guidelines?

the crux of this is whether it is damages etc. or paid under the terms of any contract.

I would favour that it would be non-taxable compensation but really she would be best to consult a local tax adviser who would be able to review the paperwork and advise.

Thanks very much for your help.

The money is meant to roughly reflect an amount that he would have spent on her had he not been killed because of their negligence (If that makes sense).

I would have thought that would be non-taxable but I shall read up on it and advise her to get some further expert advice.
