Offsetting rent against rental income

Postby mick.honnor@ntlworld on Sun Sep 05, 2004 5:05 am

I have a one year research contract at a university, 350 miles away, and plan to rent our house out and rent for a year. My question is can I offset my rent against the rental income or do I have to pay tax on the full rental income from our house.

No. What you can set against your rental income are the costs of maintaining the property you are renting out, including mortgage interest.
