Personal allowance and income taxation

Personal allowance and income taxation

Postby Reggie885 on Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:53 pm

Hi,

I have recently come to the UK and started working here. Now I have received my first pay, but it is slightly lower than I expected.
After a little search I found my employer used tax code '0T M1' --> no personal allowance left.
However, I have never worked in the UK before and thus have not used up any of my personal allowance.
What do I need to do to fix this?
Contact the HMRC? Wait for the end of the tax year (P60) and reclaim overpaid taxes? Anything else?

Thanks,
Reg.

You could do either of those things. Contacting HMRC may mean that you get the tax back quicker than waiting until the end of the year.

You should ask your employer to offer you a P46. That should give you the emergency tax code, i.e. one tweflth of the annual personal allowance each month on a non-cumulative basis.
