The solicitor has no right to withhold monies you have handed over re, for example payment of SDLT. That money should be held in clients account and you can ask for it back at anytime you wish.

SDLT, as i mentioned, is self assessed. The responsibility is yours not the solicitor's. You can file your own SDLT form.

You can dis-instruct the solicitor re the SDLT aspects of the purchase.
