Rental Income and Self-Assessment

Postby kfitzpat on Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:46 am

My wife and I are currently renting a second-home.
on which we have no mortgage.
The annual rental income (before deductions) should be around £4560 (ie.. £2280 each)

I read on www.direct.gov.uk that if you are an employee and on PAYE (we both are) and the rental income is less than £2,500 per annum, then we will not need to submit a self-assessment.
My question is simple:
Can we divide the £2,500 threshold between the two of us thereby reducing the income threshold to £1250 each, which would allow us to avoid any tax declaration?

Thanks
K.

Yes, you can pay the tax by reducing your PAYE Codings.

Both of you will need to request form P810 from HMRC.
