secondment: rent/living expenses

I am here in Uk for atleast next 2 years. I am in secondment. The current pay structure given by my employeer does not talk anything about the split up of secondment benefits (rent, living expeneses). Can I still go ahead and file my returns claiming for tax benefits end of Financial year. Or it has to claimed before the beginnig of monthly salary credit (PAYE)? What would be the impacts if I claim only end of FY?
