Self Assessment Tax Return

Self Assessment Tax Return

Postby jon.m on Tue Jan 03, 2012 4:34 pm

A simple query, I hope, I am a salaried member of staff (PAYE) and I have completed a tax return for the last 8 years to reclaim higher rate tax on pension contribustions. However the pension arrangments have now changed and in the middle of 2011 I received a letter from HMRC confirming I no longer needed to submit a tax return.

However I got a letter from HMRC on the 16th december asking me to complete a tax return for the 2010/2011 period, this obviously needs to be in by the end of the month. Has anyone else had a request this late in the day and is it usual?

Many thanks

Did you receive a tax return shortly after 6 April 2011 and then receive the "no need to submit returns" letter afterwards? I suspect so. You need to complete a 2010-11 tax return, but it will be your last one (unless anything changes which means that you need to submit in the future). The letter in December was a normal reminder, not a notice to file a return. If such a notice to file is issued after the end of October, then you have 3 months to comply.

Going forward, will you have bank interest etc on which you will owe higher rate tax?

thanks for the responses, the savings are in ISA'a so nothing to delcare on those.

I was more concened that it came late in the day and the natural concern with the HMRC made me wonder if they had changed their minds for a reason
