If this were me, I'd do a return based on similar basis to what he has always done, including any claims etc, tick estimated return and give circumstances and advise a revised return will be submitted as soon as possible given the circumstances. Also include a note in the additional information box about the circumstances and what you have used for the tax return figures etc. I doubt any sensible HMRC member of staff would argue against something like this.
