Self employment NIC and moving abroad

Self employment NIC and moving abroad

Postby sleepysunday on Thu Sep 15, 2011 5:07 pm

Hello
My husband has been self employed since march and we are moving abroad permanently at the end of September. For some reason he has not been sent a statement saying he owes any NIC since he started and the payments have not yet been set up by him. Does anyone know why he wouldn't have been contacted regarding making payment?

Also as we are moving I wanted to know what his position is with regards to paying the amount we are assuming he owes? Will he not need to pay given it is so few months and we are moving permanently, or will he have to settle the amount before he leaves? And what happens once we gave left in terms of his contributions either previously paid or owed?

He was sent a bill some time ago asking him to pay money but that was regarding payment to fill in the gaps from when he wasn't self employed so I understand these payments are voluntary.

Any information would be a great help.

Sleepy.

When he registered as self-employed, did he agree to monthly direct debits, or was he expecting a bill?
It sometimes takes a while to set up DD's, but they should be there by now - suggest you telephone (look at the last correspondence for the number) to find out what has happened in this case.

If he was expecting a bill, again it may simply be a delay in the system, and a quick call can sort it out.
