Tax Codes and Total tax

Tax Codes and Total tax

Postby joe85 on Sun Dec 19, 2010 1:30 pm

Hi guys,

First time poster so apologies if this has been asked before.

Basically, my tax code for this year is 647L and has been since the beginning of the tax year starting April 09.
Now a quick search on the HMRC website says this is the emergency tax code, slightly bemused i thought i would use there claculator to see if i have paid too much tax.

The first box is total gross income, easy. the second box is total tax. Thats where im confused. Does this mean total tax, as in, just tax? Or does it mean both NI and tax?

If its the latter the calculator says im owed approx £3000 for both this year and the previous. If its just total tax, as in, just Income tax then its says i am owed £600 for this year and absoloutly nothing for the year previous even though i was on the same tax code 647L whcih the HMRC website says is the emergency tax code.

Does any of this make sense as im slightly confused. i cant ring either HMRC or my payroll department as its Sunday!

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is no need to post in two forums - it can lead to fragmented responses and to people spending time on providing answers which have already been given. This has been answered in income tax.

This is the basic tax code so unless you have allowances or benefits related to your employment it's extremely unlikely that a tax rebate is due. AchinaTax
