Tax debt from 10 years ago HELP

Postby Messer on Wed Jan 18, 2012 8:19 pm

Evening all

I have just joined this site in the hope of finding someone to help me with my messy tax affairs.
The very basic story is i had an accountant who falsely claimed a large rebate got it paid to his company and kept most of the money, the tax office investigated it around 7 years ago and is currently chasing me for over 20k.
I have 3 years self employment returns to complete and after those horrendous years i believe i can show a very substantial loss, i am hoping that at the very least these will cancel out this current bill. Anyway due to past experiences i need to know if anyone can recommend a company near Bromley in kent that may be able to help or any other suggestions.

Under the circumstances I would recommend to engage tax specialist or an accountant who has experience in this field. There are few members on this site but I do not think they are near Kent.

You could use this website's service to find the tax advisers.

Hi I actually live in the Bromley area, I can recommend one firm, Crane and Partners - a simple google search can find them.
Do you adore to transfer your artistic and inventive qualities to renovate a part type? Perhaps your friends who tour your sanctuary head remarks about want they could levy you to change their premises.

Unfortunately, probably not. If the debt (arising from taxable profit but with a questionable loss claim) is from 8 or 9 years ago (based on HMRC investigating it 7 years ago), and if your business is established (i.e. not new), then a loss can only be used in the current year or one previous year. Losses in the early years of a business can only go back 3 years, so it looks like that can't apply either.

So a realistic approach I think is that a new accountant should be able to deal with your outstanding tax returns and compute the loss, but will not be able to wipe out the £20K debt. Do you have any legal recourse to the accountant who claimed the dodgy repayment?

Yes i did, i ran out of money trying to get him through the courts.

Bottom line is i can submit my returns showing losses of as much as possible which will be easy, get the debt down as much as possible and hopefully remorgage to pay it off.
Sucks but i have no other choice.

Just to reiterate, declaring losses will not reduce your £20,000 debt.

I used a company thats not local to Bromley but have plenty of clients in the Bromley area. They helped me in a similar situation and I'm sure they'd be able to assist you. Just email appleton@appletonrichardson.co.uk and say that Jacob recommended you. Good luck.
