Tax due on Inherited Property Abroad

Tax due on Inherited Property Abroad

Postby Rockyroad on Wed Aug 19, 2009 6:01 am

If you are UK resident (and domiciled) and you inherit property from outside the UK, are you liable to pay IHT or any other tax on the proceeds? Also, if the property was to be sold later but the funds kept abroad, would CGT be due?

Thanks in advance.

No UK taxes due on the inheritance (possible CGT if foreign currency inherited but converted to £ at later date); there may however be overseas taxes levied on the inheritance.

Unless you are non-UK domiciled and claim remittance basis treatment CGT is leviable on a disposal of a UK resident's worldwide assets.
