Tax Exemption Possible for a Coaching Business?

Tax Exemption Possible for a Coaching Business?

Hi,
We run a chess coaching business in London doing the usual after-school activities and holiday camps. We are a Limited Company. We are near the threshold and are looking into possible VAT exemptions.

I have heard about some subjects being exempt such as drama or even golf. Chess is taught throughout the UK but not usually as part of the official curriculum, so I am not sure if we can qualify. There are 70,000 chess kids competing through their school each year in the UK Chess Challenge, and there has been a case of a PHd chess course being taught in Scotland.

We have an accountant but this is not his field of expertise.

If we could be directed to an accounting firm in London that would have expertise in this area and charge fees that are within range for a small business that would be great.

The other catch is I have heard that even if chess would qualify, it would only qualify if we were a partnership or sole trader - is that correct?

Thanks in advance
Sam

also - some other options: can we set up as a 'school' and would that make us VAT exempt

Finally - if we did go ahead and register now, and later find there was a way around having to pay VAT, would we later be able to de-register? or is it something of a one way street?

thanks again!
