Tax refund letter

Tax refund letter

Postby frozeter on Sat Dec 03, 2011 11:21 pm

Hi my wife got a letter today from HMRC saying she had over paid over a period of 2 years, the years were 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 and it sort of added those two together and said "A payable order for this amount has been issued to you seperately"

As far as we can make out, at the bottom of the explanation sheet it says Repayment Due : £1036.92 - Does this mean we will recieve this amount by Cheque?

This letter has sort of given us a bit of hope that we might have some money to spend on our 2 kids for Xmas, but as i said to the wife knowing our luck we will end up oweing money

Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help a lost soul

Yes. But I would advise you to check the basis and quantum of the overpayment for each year at the same standard that you would have checked a demand for £1,036.92. Just to be sure. Feel free to post more information here if you need to understand precisely why these overpayments arose. It might be simple - e.g. that your wife was being taxed with code BR (basic rate) and that no allowances were given, or that in the past she had a benefit such as a company car and that it wasn't removed from her tax code.

Thanks for the reply Mullet, i have no real idea how to check what the basis of the over payment is but i think its on PAYE Income.

At the bottom of the letter it says :

The Result what we have to pay or what we owe you
Repayment of tax (A+D) 1029.67
Plus Repayment supplement (where appropriate) 7.29
Repayment Due 1036.92

So check P60s and P45s for the year, to make sure that the income and tax figures exactly match the HMRC calculation.
