I have read the regulations regarding training costs and tax deductible status. I am confused since the training I require lies between the two definitions. I work in IT in a very diverse range of specialisms. As part of my job and to maintain some of my qualifications I am required to complete at least 2 training courses per year and also take professional examinations. In fact, in the area I work, not maintaining my skills and learning new things could mean that I risk losing my ability to practice. I currently work in the areas that these courses relate to but I do as a process of the courses acquire new skills which will allow me to take on different work. Are these tax deductible?

Are you employed or self employed?

If your employed there is no tax relief available if you pay for the courses yourself

If your self employed, you can claim courses for maintain skills as a revenue expense and courses for obtaining new skills as a capital expense

Thank you. Sorry, I should have said, I am self employed (ST). Am I correct in thinking that as a capital expense it can simply be claimed for like any other business items? I have read the relevant parts about how it would be a capital asset and hence prohibited by ICTA88/S74. However, I am unclear if this means that I can still claim the full cost against the business in general or if it has to be somehow proportioned?
