Trying to find out NI Number ( usual story)

Postby matt1 on Sun Nov 13, 2011 3:26 pm

Hi all, New member with a question.

I am a 30 yo male living in rep of IReland . My folks are English and their folks are english etc etc. I was born in england. And moved to Ireland with them when I was 3years of age.. Now time has come that my and my wife & Kids are heading back to england in the very near future.

The question is .. would I have a NI # already issued as I was a uk citizen? or do I have to apply for a new one? Also how do I go About either of these possibilities..

Thanks in advanced

Matt

There were two systems in place, and I can't remember the cut-off date. The old system was that NI numbers were allocated shortly before you turned 16 years of age. So under that system you would not already have a NINO. The "application for NINO info is here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/NationalInsurance/IntroductiontoNationalInsurance/DG_190057. Good luck ...

The newer system is that a NINO is allocated at birth - meaning that you would already have one. All you would have to do (assuming that logic might apply here) is visit a DSS office, prove your DOB and identity, and they should be able to tell you your NINO.

Should have said

Because it was based on the child benefit system.
