Using My private car for work

Postby andy.leiper@yahoo.co.uk on Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:49 pm

I have been using my own private car for work for the last 3 years , My employer pays me 45p for the first 10k miles and 25p for any above that. the company have now told me that I must start recording all my private Milage as well . They have told me it is for the HMRC . I already record all business milage. and dont see the need to record private milage as this is private. I have also just purchased a new car on hp can i clain tax relief on the payments,
Regards
Andy

There is no requirement for you to record private mileage. Just keep a contemporaneous record of your business journeys. Date, start point, finish point, distance, purpose.

The 45p / 25p rates are "all in", and are intended to cover fuel, servicing, wear/tear, insurance, tax, MOT, depreciation etc. So you cannot claim anything over and above those rates such as for HP interest.

I agree with mullet.

If you had been self-employed(and turn-over below the VAT threshold), the HP interest could be claimed (restricted for any private use).

I seem to recall, going back to when the mileage rate was first brought in, that it was a little known and little publicised fact that employees could claim finance charges on their vehicles over and above the (then) 40ppm. Maybe I imagined it or maybe it has changed since, perhaps someone could discuss.

Employees & Directors used to have the option of claiming business mileage OR all the motoring expenses (including finance interest) less a restriction for private use.

That ended 10 years ago, so mileage is now the only option.
