Working abroad for 6-12 months

Working abroad for 6-12 months

Postby carpetseller on Sun Nov 27, 2011 12:57 pm

I have a UK property and am a UK citizen. My family are all based in UK.
I have an opportunity to work for a Middle East company for most of 2012. Possibly a period of 6 months initially commencing January, then possible 3 month extensions after then. They won't tax me on any earnings at all.
I would rent an apartment there and my wife would join me. We'd only come back to UK every 3 months for a long weekend.
Would I still have to pay UK tax on the earnings, or any money brought into the UK at the end of the contract?

Yes. In your particular circumstances you will remain UK resident for tax purposes.

Try and get the contract to start say 1 April 2012 and to span through until say 30 April 2013; then you will lose UK residence and no UK tax on the income.
