The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) will launch Tax Advice week on Monday 15 October 2007. The "Taxables" will launch Tax Advice Week on Monday 15 October. Britain’s first (cartoon) family of tax will be having a day out in Westminster. First, they will have their photographs taken by the Houses of Parliament and then be visiting HM Treasury to meet a VIP. Tax Advice Week is an annual event organised by the Institute which aims to help people better understand tax through the running of a series of events. Rob Ellerby, CIOT President, says: “The events that the CIOT run range from a debate with politicians on policy issues to teaching tax in schools. The tax lesson is taught using football so that young people become more engaged with a subject that is difficult for adults, let alone those still at school.” The week is being launched in London. There will also be events up and down the country. Rob Ellerby adds: “The CIOT believes it is very important that people have a basic understanding of tax. Of course, they cannot be expected to understand every bit of tax law but once they have an idea how tax works, they are able to take more control of their finances. It is also helpful to understand when they need advice. We always make it clear that people should get qualified professional advice. Even the low-paid taxpayer, the unrepresented, can get professional advice as TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People have professional tax advisers as volunteers who give their expertise for free.” Tax Advice Week is sponsored by Interactive Data and Pure Recruitment.
