Form SA1 v4 registering for self-assessment and tax return

Postby beerbore » Tue Sep 29, 2026 12:49 pm

For some reason HMRC had problems identifying my address and asked me to complete form SA1, print it and send it to them instead of applying online. The form is so badly designed I wondered if it was some kind of scam. The question "Please indicate the tax year" has boxes for day, month and year instead of just year. The words "I declare that" are not followed by the declaration.
There were insufficient spaces for the NI number. The quoted address to send it to seems genuine however. I am safe in submitting this amateurish effort?

B,

Do you perhaps have a poor photocopy? To illustrate:

The original form I have seen (admittedly not "v4") does in fact pre-complete the day and month boxes for the CGT tax year part of the form.

It includes 9 spaces for the NINo, which is the correct format - AA NN NN NN A. (If you are "old school", then your physical card may have more characters at the end but they are never used, to my reasonably extensive knowledge; however, it is I suppose possible that you were issued with an 8-character Temporary Number at some point. I don't think HMRC accepts these any more.)

It also includes a declaration that, "the information I have given on this form...[etc.]

Does the form (or the enclosing letter) ask you to return it to Benton Park View at NE98 1ZZ? If so, I cannot see any harm; if not then I might wonder if you do in fact have have a legitimate form.

If you are trying to complete an online form then all bets are off: they tend to look like they were prepared by ChatGPT-6 (the version that couldn't hack its way out of a paper bag).

Regards,

Lambs

Yes it is an online form, evidently on the HMRS website. The address I am to send it to is HM Revenue and Customs, NIC&EO, BX9 1AN. I have googled this address and it seems authentic.
I find it incredible that any Government department nowadays would produce such a slapdash form.

Thank you for your help Lambs.
I have found the correct form and downloaded and printed it from taxinnovations.com. It is markedly different from the one I completed on the HMRC site and it is not "V4". It gives the address that you quoted. I can complete it manually and send it. For whatever reason, the HMRC site was less than helpful.
