IHT liability twice?

Postby roversaloon » Sun Aug 26, 2018 11:58 am

My mother, 92 will leave a significant IHT bill for her surviving family to settle. To help prepare for this, she has gifted some cash to her children so that it will be available outside of probate. My question is this. If she dies within 7 years, the value of the gift will form part of her estate for IHT purposes (although some will taper as she has given away in excess of her £325k allowance.) The money is now sitting in my accounts and so forms part of my estate. If I die before her; say next week, and she dies a few days later, will I have to pay IHT on the money now sitting in my accounts and she will also have to pay IHT on the same amounts?
