Offsetting travel expenses not reimbursed by employer

Postby CuteLioness » Thu Jan 26, 2017 10:14 am

Hi there,

I am worrying about filling in my Employment self-assessment boxes on my return.

I drive between several different locations every week, in my own car, to do my job. Until now I have not been putting in a claim for the mileage to my employer as I have been including the mileage on the employment expenses part of my tax returns instead.

Is this allowed? I have never thought to ask my employer for it back as I have always just done it this way due to also being self-employed.

To be clear, I don't include the mileage from home to my recorded work address and back, only the extra miles over above this (although the other locations are all usually the same each week).

With the new red warning box coming up on these pages it's got me Googling and now I'm worried I've been doing something I shouldn't have :(

Thanks in advance!
