Registering for Self Assessment

Postby jbs2020 » Sat Sep 16, 2017 7:17 pm

Hello all,

I sent a tax return last year and sending again this year. Do I have to register for self-assessment again?

https://www.gov.uk/log-in-file-self-ass ... f-employed

It says "If you have to send a tax return and didn’t send one last year, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October." and also "If you’ve sent a return before

To register, you’ll need the 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) from when you registered previously. You can find your UTR if you’ve lost it.

Use the online account you set up previously to file your tax return."

So I'm bit confused. Do any of you regular tax returners register for self assessment? Please advise.

Thank you!

If you are registered then you are registered. If you need to complete a Return and haven't been sent a notice to complete one, your legal obligation (s.7 TMA 1970) is fulfilled by notifying HMRC that you have reportable income. If HMRC have sent you a notice to file a Return, then you must do so (s.8 TMA 1970) unless you have the notice withdraw (s.8B)
