Tax return needed?

Postby JACB » Sun Oct 01, 2017 6:38 pm

I don't understand why I don't need to file a self assessment return with pension income of £30000 and untaxed savings income of £9000. It seems to me I should be paying income tax but the HMRC site says I don't need to file a return. Could anyone clarify please?

If that was for the period to 5 April 2017, you have until 5 October to tell HMRC that you have a tax liability. They are likely to ask you to complete a return. This is because your untaxed incoem is over 2500. The website isn't clear in this point.

You will probably have a tax bill for 2016/2017.

We can do a quick check for you at no cost.

The HMRC website indicates the criteria for having to submit a tax return. However, you can submit a tax return whether HMRC requests one or not. Personally, I've submitted a tax return every year since 1966, mainly to check my calculation against HMRC's and also to ensure any tax payment/refund is up-to-date.

HMRC's statements as to when a tax return must be filed seem to me to have no statutory authority whatsoever. They are, I would suggest, "guidance" only and should not be used by a taxpayer to determine whether or not they have to file.
