income tax and savings relief

Postby steven13 » Wed Jan 31, 2018 1:22 pm

Some advice please.
The tax deducted from my salary during the last tax year, is correct taking into account my salary, and the personal allowance.
In addition I have Rental Income profit of £2000 on which the tax due would be £400
I also had a life assurance policy gain and the Chargeable Event Certificate shows gains of £11768, (28 years) and tax deducted of £2358.
I had expected that I would owe tax of £400, however the HMRC's calculation shows I owe just £200 as it has given me £1000 of nil rate band tax relief against the life policy gain.
I am overall a basic rate tax payer. Is the HMRC calculation correct in giving me the nil rate band for savings against the gain.
Thanks for any help given
