The first £11500

Postby Hxsimon » Fri Apr 06, 2018 4:30 pm

Hi, the first £11500 is tax free, I pay tax all year including the first 11500 which is £2300 , do I get this back at the end of the year ,.
Last year I got £2500 back that was after putting in expenses and minus class 2 and 4
It seem a small amount considering the £2300 Is off the £11500 tax free amount.
Thanks

Still very confusing

In summary you cant back any more tax than you paid in the first place.
Once your income drops below a certain level extra deductions will have no benefit - so if your income is 8000 or 7000 you will likely get the same rebate - so the extra 1k of expenses may have no practical benefit in the tax calc

for sole traders the £145.60 will either be billed in full or not at all

finally note class 4Ni starts at profits of approx £8,100 - so you will pay some class 4 NI even if your profit is below the personal allowance level.
