Re: HMRC tax forum-is it a good idea?

I agree that the forum is useful if only to be assured that we are not the only ones having problems registering for online self assessment. If HMRC want us all to submit returns online , they are going to have to find a better way to register. Otherwise, we will have to continue submitting paper re...

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

We are pretty sure that it is my husband's non uk passport that causes the problem. Government Gatewy is definitely out of the question if you do not have a British passport and the third party companies won’t accept his application either so we are stuck on paper returns.

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

I agree! It is a pain! It is ironic that we are so compliant in submitting tax returns and yet get no help in doing so!

Re: HMRC tax forum-is it a good idea?

I just used a user name. Even though we have been frustrated at the inability to verify with the Post Office, I have been reassured by the HMRC forum answers which were helpful.

Re: HMRC tax forum-is it a good idea?

I think it is a good idea to post in both places and compare! I have registered but i don’t find it very user friendly. Also their webchat answers are not exactly 'chatty'! But more monosyllabic. However, I was pleased to learn that I could get through fairly quickly.

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

Yes, I have read that it can be problematic to register using the Verify route! I anticipate problems but that appears to be the only option. My husband does not have a British passport so that might be the first stumbling block. I managed to get onto HMRC webchat and was given the advice that robbob...

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

Hardly surprising that I cannot understand how to set up online self assessment when I cannot even post a reply properly on this forum! So copying it here rather than in the middle of your post, robbob. Thanks! I am lost! But I did follow the link you sent to sign up to his personal tax account. You...

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

You should not be doing any forms to register for sefl assessment if you are already in self assessment. So presuming self assessments are already in the mix (being issued) then don't do sa1 or online registration for sole trader or online registration for self assessment. To submit your tax return...

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

"Registering for Self Assessment and getting a tax return" can be done on Form SA1. Google Form SA1 and you should then have a form to complete and lodge with HMRC. Yes, that is exactly what we did! That is the form we used and it was rejected saying he already had a self assessment record and UTR....

Re: Problems registering for online assessment

I found the following on the gov.uk website which may act as a checklist for you to see where the process is breaking down. I must admit I find all this stuff bewildering and so others may be able to provide you with clearer advice. https://www.gov.uk/log-in-file-self-assessment-tax-return If you’r...
