Donor liability less than gift aid claimed ?

Hi tax friends If a HRTP donor makes a lump donation to a charity, what’s the maximum gift aid capacity per tax year (ignoring gift aid carry back) ? At first glance it’s 4x tax paid. Or is it ? S423 ITA 2007 talks about the tax treated as deducted etc vs the IT and CGT paid in the year etc. What ab...

Personal Tax Account-change PAYE tax code for pension etc?

Hi tax friends

Is it possible to use the Personal Tax Account to change the estimated in year personal pension relief and gift aid relief in your PAYE code ?

If not, why not ? The alternative of calling hmrc takes ages !

Thanks.

Re: HMRC confusion on £3000 underpayment

Thanks robbob. I called HMRC. They needed to link my PAYE record to the SA system. That sorted it. Not sure why I needed to ask in this day and age but hey! They’d also cancelled my marriage allowance again (you might recall my post a few months back). Once they “reconciled” it on their system it ca...

Re: HMRC confusion on £3000 underpayment

Hi again robbob, thank you for the reply. The original assessment for 18-19 was raised by p800 dated 8 September. I submitted my tax return for 18-19 on 9 September ie one day later. Yes as you suspected, the amounts are different due to expense claims (mileage and professional fees). I agree it put...

HMRC confusion on £3000 underpayment

Hi tax friends Could anyone help me with the following situation, please ? The “exam question” is if an underpayment of less than £3000 tax is due in 19-20 or 20-21 ? 16-17 no underpayments in previous years 17-18 I had a small paye underpayment of approx £220 18-19 I had a large underpayment (as I ...

Re: Marriage allowance - HMRC confused

Success ! As suggested by robbob, i called up and asked them to process the GROSS pension contributions and then reprocess the marriage allowance transfer ( for which they wanted confirmation from my spouse on the phone ). It worked ! New P800 coming in the post showing corrected liability plus new ...

Re: Marriage allowance - HMRC confused

Our posts crossed but thanks ! It does appear from a web search that relief at source pension contributions are grossed up when extending the basic rate band. Possibly they have misunderstood. Is there a good form of words to explain this?

Re: Marriage allowance - HMRC confused

Edit - I just dig out my pension contribution statements and they confirm the contributions are treated as net of income tax. It’s just a bog standard Scottish Widows pension.

It looks like s192 FA04 s3 and s4 may have the answer but I’m not sure.

Re: Marriage allowance - HMRC confused

Darthblingbling, it was me paying personally into a pension, not a deduction from my salary. Not sure how to tell the answer to your other query exactly ?

Re: Marriage allowance - HMRC confused

Hi tax friends, the P800 has arrived. The following extracts / points are relevant : 1. HMRC agrees with both the income figures and charitable donations 2. There is no problem with the Personal Savings Allowance 3. The extended basic rate band has been calculated as £44,648. I think this is the bas...
