selling for charities

Postby Squibbs » Sat Aug 29, 2026 8:42 am

Hi to you all.
Having retired many years ago, I recently took up a hobby and have written a couple of history books on local activities. I have had them printed, sold them and donated all profits to charities. Not hundreds of books, more like a couple of dozen.
As I am not making a profit, actually I often give the charities more money than I sell the books for, I haven’t thought of the taxman.
I am now writing another manuscript and wondered if I had better let them know.
Only at my time of life, my wife and I don’t want all the aggravation the HMRC can cause.
Please advise on my situation.
Kind regards to all.

You don't have to inform HMRC until you derive an income from the book, and even then there are exemptions available.
If you get a publishing deal, you may need an accountant........... but first write the book.
With a pinch of salt take what I say, but don't exceed your RDA
