Selling Property Before you Move abroad

Postby Gazbrown1983 » Tue Jun 27, 2017 12:09 pm

Hello can anybody advise me if you sold your house and profit was in your bank account. But then you moved to New Zealand say a week later, Would hrmc be after you for CGT? Also the same scenario but the sale didn't complete until to you where living in New Zealand say a month? Is it the case that if you lived in the U.K. For 9 months in the tax year you would avoid paying CHT on your profit?

Thanks Gareth

If you were resident in the UK on the date of "exchange" (not "completion") then a CGT charge arises irrespective (unless of course, for example, you had lived in the property).

If it was your home there's no CGT to pay on it anyway.
